Established & Dispersed Camping Regulations

Most BLM campgrounds charge a use fee that helps cover upkeep and services. Campsites are typically assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, though some campgrounds accept reservations through recreation.gov. Follow all posted campground rules and note the following:

  • Fees differ by site. Check the campground’s web page or contact the local field office for current rates.

  • Length-of-stay limits vary but are commonly around two weeks within a 30-day period.

  • Pay your campsite fee within 30 minutes of taking the site.

  • A site is considered rented only after the fee has been paid in full, the payment stub is filled out and displayed at the site, and the site is occupied by campers.

  • Do not leave personal belongings unattended for more than 72 hours unless a different time limit is posted at that location.

  • Many campgrounds are seasonal and close during adverse weather; confirm that the site is open before you travel.

  • Dispersed camping on public land is generally allowed but usually limited to 14 days within any 28-day period; specific limits can vary by office. Also, campers should not leave personal property unattended for more than 10 days (12 months in Alaska).
